Student Exchange with our Sister Lions Club in the Czech Republic
In 1992, the Prescott Sunrise Lions Club helped charter a sister club in the town of Rychnov in the Czech Republic. As a result of the close cooperation between these two clubs, a student exchange program was developed and implemented in 2003.
Each year, two students are selected from the high school in Rychnov and receive a travel scholarship to visit our Lions Club in Prescott, AZ in the Spring. Our Prescott club reciprocates by sending two Prescott High School students to the Czech Republic for two weeks, generally during the month of June.
The students from Prescott are chosen through an essay contest, open to all students of Prescott High School. Students are asked to research and write an essay about certain cultural, political, and historical events in the Czech Republic. The authors of the top two essays as judged by members of the Prescott Sunrise Lions Club are awarded travel scholarships to the Czech Republic. Round-trip airfare is paid by the club and the students stay with member families of the Rychnov Club during their visit in the Czech Republic.
In April of 2006 Czech students Dana Cernohousova and Anna Aabelova spent over a week in and around Prescott seeing the sights, meeting people, visiting our high school and participating in our paper recycling project. Although the were flown to Las Vegas and to Disney Land in California, they say that their fondest memory of the trip was getting lost in the Grand Canyon with Lion Tony Humphrey.
The Exchange provides both Czech and Prescott students with an opportunity to travel abroad and experience the unique differences between the two cultures. For more information, please contact our student exchange chairman, Mike Beatty, at (928) 717-2000.
Czech students Petr Narwa and Sarka Hola were treated to an airplane ride and visit to Las Vegas as part of their 10 day stay in Prescott in the spring of 2003.
